Opened in 1986 under a different name, in a different themed area, Congo River Rapids has outlasted the Corkscrew, The Blade, Ripsaw, Submission and the Log Flume.

It's genuinely the oldest ride still operating at Alton Towers — and there's more to it than a lap of a concrete trough.

It Predates the Theme It Sits In

Here's the genuinely odd thing about this ride: Katanga Canyon was built around it, six years after it opened.

The rapids arrived in 1986 as Grand Canyon Rapids, part of the park's earlier American-themed era.

In 1992, Alton Towers built the Katanga Canyon area on the island in the centre of the existing rapids circuit — a genuinely clever bit of land use — along with the new Runaway Mine Train, covered elsewhere on this site.

The new land gave guests far better views of the rapids than they'd previously had. And to suit the new African theme, Grand Canyon Rapids became Congo River Rapids.

Same ride, same water, new continent.

The Shared Tunnel

The best detail on the ride, and it's easy to miss.

Boats navigate a course through Katanga Canyon that passes through a tunnel shared with the Runaway Mine Train.

That interaction was deliberate. John Wardley specified a custom layout for the Mine Train specifically so the coaster could dive into a tunnel and follow the rapids' course.

The result: train passengers and rapids riders can see and wave at each other mid-ride. No other pairing of attractions at Alton Towers does this.

How It Actually Works

Three components, and the engineering is genuinely elegant.

A flatbed lift raises boats to the start of the course.

A concrete trough carries the water, with the current — not any onboard propulsion — moving the boats.

A continuously rotating turntable station, designed specifically to maximise throughput. Boats never stop; guests board a moving platform.

That turntable is why a 7.5-minute ride can handle 2,480 riders per hour — genuinely one of the highest throughputs at the park, and considerably better than most coasters.

The Boats Have Changed Twice

The original boats were red and held six riders.

In 2004 they were replaced with yellow, eight-passenger boats to increase throughput.

From 2019, capacity was reduced again from 8 to 7 — and new restrictions barred under-18s from riding without an accompanying adult during school trip seasons.

The 2023 Soundtrack

In 2023, a new soundtrack was added with additional announcements — a small but genuine investment in a ride approaching its fortieth season.

Will You Get Wet?

Yes.

Not Tidal Wave levels of soaked, but genuinely wet. The ride is unpredictable by design — where the water hits depends on how the boat spins, which depends on weight distribution, which nobody controls.

Some riders emerge nearly dry. Others get comprehensively drenched. That randomness is the appeal.

Practical advice: ponchos are sold around the park, phones should go in a waterproof pocket or a locker, and if you're riding early on a cold day, consider whether you want to spend the next hour damp.

Height Restrictions

1.1m minimum.

1.3m to ride unaccompanied — riders between 1.1m and 1.3m need an adult with them.

That makes it one of the more accessible major attractions for families, sitting at the same 1.1m threshold as the Runaway Mine Train next door.

Why It's Lasted

Four genuine reasons this ride has outlived nearly everything else in the park:

Capacity. At 2,480 riders per hour it's a genuine crowd-eater, taking pressure off the coasters.

Accessibility. The 1.1m threshold means most of a family can ride together.

Duration. Seven and a half minutes is exceptional value in queue-to-ride terms.

Simplicity. Water, gravity and a concrete trough. There's comparatively little to go wrong, and maintenance is straightforward compared to a coaster.

Practical Tips

Ride mid-afternoon on a warm day — you'll dry off, and it's genuinely refreshing.

Avoid it late on a cold day unless you're heading straight home.

Use the lockers — covered elsewhere on this site — rather than gambling with your phone.

Watch for the Mine Train in the tunnel. It's the best moment of the ride and most people miss it.

The Verdict

It isn't thrilling. It was never meant to be.

What it is, genuinely, is one of the best-value attractions in the park: seven and a half minutes, a high throughput queue that moves, a family-friendly height limit, and a genuinely unique interaction with the coaster next door.

Forty seasons in, that's a solid record.
