If you're visiting Alton Towers alone, or don't mind splitting from your group for a couple of minutes, this is the single most underused queue-cutting tool in the park — and it's completely free.

How It Works

Ride trains rarely fill perfectly. A group of three leaves one seat empty; a family of five leaves three. Single rider queues exist to fill those gaps, slotting solo visitors into whatever space is left on the next dispatch.

You won't sit with your group. You may not even ride with the same people twice. But you'll often be riding while the standard queue is still moving.

Which Rides Have One

According to official Alton Towers guidance, the following currently operate a single rider queue:

• Galactica
• Oblivion
• Spinball Whizzer
• TH13TEEN
• The Smiler
• Toxicator

Look for the separate, clearly signed entrance at each ride. Nemesis Reborn and Wicker Man do not currently offer one — worth knowing before you plan a solo-focused route around the park.

Which Ones Are Actually Worth It

Not all single rider queues perform equally, and this is where most guides stop short.

Spinball Whizzer is the standout. Its four-person cars frequently run with a spare seat, and the single rider line here consistently moves faster than the main queue.

The Smiler works well too — wide carriages, frequent odd numbers, generally efficient.

Oblivion and Galactica are solid, though slightly more dependent on how busy the day is.

Toxicator can be inconsistent. Its seating pattern means single rider sometimes crawls rather than flies — worth checking the posted wait against the main queue before committing, rather than assuming it's automatically faster.

TH13TEEN varies by train configuration on the day.

The Trade-Off

The catch is obvious but worth stating plainly: you don't ride with your group. For coasters, that's a minor sacrifice most people barely notice. For anything themed around a shared story or reaction — Hex, for instance — riding solo changes the experience more than it would on a straight thrill coaster.

If keeping your group together matters more than saving time, skip it and queue normally.

A Useful Extra: Parent Q-Share

If you're travelling with a child who doesn't meet the height requirement, ask about Parent Q-Share at rides offering single rider queues. It allows parents to take turns riding via the single rider line while the other waits with the child — both parents get a turn without queuing twice or splitting the whole visit.

The Short Version

Solo, or happy to briefly split from your group? Head straight for Spinball Whizzer and The Smiler. Skip Nemesis and Wicker Man, since neither offers the option at all. And always eyeball the queue before committing — on a quiet day, the difference can be marginal.
