The Best Order to Ride Alton Towers' Coasters

Most people arrive at Alton Towers, walk up Towers Street with everyone else, and join the first big queue they see.

That single decision can cost you two hours over the course of a day.

Alton Towers has a specific geography and a specific crowd pattern, and routing around both is the difference between riding everything and riding most things.

The Core Principle

The crowd moves clockwise. You should move anti-clockwise — or go further first.

The park's layout funnels arriving guests along Towers Street and then right, towards Mutiny Bay, Gloomy Wood and the nearer attractions. Forbidden Valley and Dark Forest sit at the far end of the site.

Most people ride what's closest. The fastest coasters to build queues in the first hour are therefore the ones nearest the entrance — and the ones at the back stay quiet slightly longer.

Walk further first. It feels counterintuitive and it works.

The Recommended Route

1. Nemesis Reborn (Forbidden Valley) Head straight there. It's a long walk, which is precisely why it's worth doing first — you arrive ahead of the crowd that stopped on the way. Nemesis builds one of the longest queues in the park by mid-morning.

2. Galactica (Forbidden Valley) You're already there. Galactica is a short walk from Nemesis and rarely queues as heavily, making it an efficient immediate second.

3. Wicker Man (Mutiny Bay-side) Cut back across. Wicker Man is popular, well themed, and its queue grows steadily through the morning rather than spiking — so it's still manageable at this point.

4. Oblivion and The Smiler (X-Sector) X-Sector holds two major coasters in one compact area, which makes it the most efficient stop in the park. Do them back to back.

5. Rita and TH13TEEN (Dark Forest) Another paired area. Rita's ride time is famously short at around 25 seconds, so the queue moves faster than its length suggests.

6. Spinball Whizzer, Runaway Mine Train, Congo River Rapids Save these for the afternoon. They're lower priority for most thrill-seekers, and their queues are more forgiving late in the day.

Why This Order Works

It front-loads the worst queues. Nemesis, Wicker Man and The Smiler are the three that punish you hardest for arriving late. Getting them done before 11:30am is worth more than any other single decision.

It minimises walking. Forbidden Valley → Wicker Man → X-Sector → Dark Forest is a broadly continuous loop rather than a series of crossings. Dark Forest and X-Sector are neighbours, and pairing them saves genuine time.

It leaves flexibility at the end. The lower-priority rides are clustered in the middle of the park, so you can pick them up wherever you happen to be.

The Last Hour

Queues drop sharply in the final hour as families with young children leave and the car park exodus begins.

If there's one ride you want to repeat, this is when to do it. Join a queue shortly before closing — anyone in line when the gates close is still entitled to ride.

This is also the best time for Nemesis, which is genuinely different in low light.

Adjusting the Route

With small children: reverse the logic. Do CBeebies Land first thing while it's quiet, because it fills with pushchairs by mid-morning and never really clears. The thrill coasters aren't available to you anyway.

On a quiet midweek day: route matters far less. Walk where you like — on genuinely quiet term-time days, queues rarely exceed 20 minutes anywhere.

With Fastrack: invert everything. Use Fastrack on the big three at peak times and queue normally for everything else early and late.

Staying overnight: this is where routing changes completely. Hotel guests get early ride time before the gates open to day visitors, which means the two or three worst queues of the day can be cleared before the park properly opens. If you're staying over, use that window on Nemesis and The Smiler, then work the route in reverse with the crowd behind you.

The Short Version

Walk to the back first. Do Nemesis and Galactica before the crowd arrives. Pair X-Sector and Dark Forest. Save the smaller coasters for the afternoon, and use the last hour for a repeat ride.

Everything else is adjustment around those four rules.
