Scarefest doesn't go on sale all at once. That's the single most useful thing to know — and the reason people miss the best dates.
There are really two releases: park admission for the event dates, and then the maze and attraction tickets. They happen at different times, and the second one is the one that sells out.
Release One: Event Dates and Admission
Scarefest dates are usually announced well ahead of the event, and admission for those dates becomes bookable early — often while the summer season is still running.
At this stage you can lock in your day, and your price. Because Alton Towers uses dynamic pricing, booking admission early is generally the cheaper option, and it secures popular dates like October half-term and Saturdays before they fill.
What you often can't do yet is book the mazes.
Release Two: Mazes and Attractions
The full maze lineup, synopses and add-on tickets tend to arrive late in the summer, typically around the end of August or the start of September.
As a reference point, in 2023 the maze tickets went live at midday on 1 September, alongside the full lineup announcement. Exact dates vary year to year, but that late-summer window has been a reliable pattern.
This is the release worth watching. Maze entry is timeslotted, usually every 15 minutes, and capacity is far smaller than park admission. Evening slots on peak dates go first.
How to Catch the Release
Follow the official channels. Announcements land on Alton Towers' social media and email list first.
Book admission first, mazes second. You don't need to wait for the maze release to secure your date. Once mazes go on sale, you can add them to an existing booking.
Prioritise evening slots. Mazes are at their most atmospheric after dark, which is exactly why those slots sell first.
Check bundles. Multi-maze bundles are normally better value than buying singles, and are covered in our Scarefest bundles guide.
What If You Miss It?
Not everything is lost.
Solo maze tickets can often be bought on the day via the app or Resort Box Office — but availability is very limited, and popular slots rarely survive the morning.
Passholders should check their pass tier's excluded dates before booking. Lower tiers are commonly blocked on peak Scarefest days.
Partner and Clubcard codes typically have limited availability on event dates, so redeem them early rather than late.
The Short Version
Book your admission as soon as dates are announced. Watch for the late-summer maze release. Buy evening maze slots first.
Leave it until the week of your visit and you'll likely still get into the park — but not necessarily into the mazes you came for.
