Alton Towers With Children of Different Heights: Rides You Can Enjoy Together

Quick answer: When children in the same family have different heights, choose rides by the shortest eligible rider, not by age or what the oldest child wants to do. At Alton Towers, several attractions have no minimum height, some start at 90cm or 1.1m, major family coasters start at 1.2m, and many of the biggest thrill rides require 1.4m. A ride may also require an accompanying adult until a higher height. These are minimums, not a promise that every guest will be able to ride.

Alton Towers height bands at a glance

Child's measured height Examples to investigate What changes for the family?
Under 90cm Sharkbait Reef, selected CBeebies Land experiences with no minimum height, subject to supervision rules Free theme-park admission under the resort's published rule; no automatic access to rides requiring 90cm or more
90cm–109cm Gangsta Granny: The Ride, Octonauts Rollercoaster Adventure, selected CBeebies Land rides More choices, but an adult may need to accompany the child
110cm–119cm Runaway Mine Train, Congo River Rapids and Marauder's Mayhem Popular shared adventures become options; check 1.3m unaccompanied thresholds for those rides
120cm–139cm Wicker Man, TH13TEEN and Spinball Whizzer The major 1.2m coasters become possible, though the 1.4m rides remain out of reach
140cm and over Nemesis Reborn, The Smiler, Oblivion, Galactica and Rita More thrill rides open up, subject to maximum heights, restraints and all other restrictions

Important: These are selected examples, not an exhaustive or guaranteed ride list. The resort measures riders and applies each attraction's current height, supervision and safety rules. Check our height guide and the resort's official Height Restrictions page before booking.

Which rides can siblings of different heights actually share?

One child is under 90cm, one is 1.1m

Start with no-minimum-height experiences such as Sharkbait Reef and suitable CBeebies Land activities. A taller sibling can also try 90cm and 1.1m rides, but the smallest child cannot simply ride because an adult is present. Split up briefly for a favourite attraction, then regroup for a shared experience. Keeping a common family plan prevents the youngest visitor from spending the day watching others queue.

One child is 1.1m, one is 1.3m

Consider Runaway Mine Train or Congo River Rapids if both meet the current restrictions. The 1.3m child may also meet 1.2m-coaster thresholds, while the 1.1m child does not. Remember that a child just over 1.1m may still require an adult on certain rides: eligibility and riding unaccompanied are two different questions.

One child is 1.2m, one is 1.4m

This is often the easiest split to plan. Both may be eligible for Wicker Man, TH13TEEN and Spinball Whizzer, while the taller visitor can add 1.4m coasters. Choose two shared rides first; put the bigger coasters into a separate window so the whole group still gets time together.

A simple family plan that avoids constant walking

  1. Measure each child before travelling. Record height in centimetres and treat borderline readings cautiously; the on-site measurement is decisive.
  2. Pick three shared priorities. Shared rides and experiences give the whole party an enjoyable core day.
  3. Pick one individual priority per older child. Allow a split-group window rather than forcing younger children to wait for every coaster.
  4. Keep adults with the appropriate children. Check the resort's Parent Q Share arrangements where relevant; it is a ride-operation arrangement, not an exemption from supervision or safety rules.
  5. Group nearby lands. Use the Unofficial Alton Towers day planner and check reported queue times rather than crossing the entire park repeatedly.

Do smaller children need an Alton Towers ticket?

Under the resort's published day-admission policy, children under 90cm enter the main theme park free and do not need a paid theme-park ticket. At 90cm and over, do not assume free entry just because the child is young. Alton Towers also markets a Parent & Toddler ticket on eligible off-peak dates for an adult and a child aged five or younger; terms, add-on child options and availability are distinct from ordinary admission. There is no universal discounted family-ticket product to assume will appear. Compare the final price for the actual heights, ages and date of your party.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 1.2m child ride Nemesis Reborn?

No. The published minimum for Nemesis Reborn is 1.4m. A 1.2m child can consider other attractions, subject to all ride requirements.

Can a 1.1m child ride Runaway Mine Train alone?

No. The published minimum is 1.1m, but riders must be at least 1.3m to ride without an adult. Other safety conditions still apply.

Are ride restrictions based on age or height?

Height, supervision requirements and safety conditions control ride access. Theme-park admission and ticket rules are separate. Age does not override the minimum ride height.

Is it worth booking for children with a big height difference?

Often yes, provided you build a plan around shared experiences and accept that not everyone will ride every coaster. Compare the tickets you actually need before booking.
