Quick answer: Alton Towers offers one complimentary Essential Companion ticket for a qualifying disabled visitor who requires support to enjoy the theme park. The visitor with the disability still buys their normal admission ticket; a qualifying companion enters free when the required evidence is provided. The companion must be at least 14 years old and able to provide the assistance needed. This ticket is not the same as a Ride Access Pass.

What is an Essential Companion ticket?

An Essential Companion ticket, previously often called a carer ticket, allows a qualifying guest who needs another person's support to be accompanied without paying a separate admission charge for that companion. It is not a general discount for the whole group. The resort says further party members pay the standard rate, and a second companion is considered only when documented additional support is required.

What proof does Alton Towers accept?

The official resort help page lists several examples of acceptable documentation. Depending on eligibility, these include:

  • Qualifying Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment or Attendance Allowance award information
  • Certain Employment and Support Allowance or related benefit evidence
  • A valid Blue Badge
  • Visual impairment registration such as a Certificate of Visual Impairment
  • A recognised Nimbus or Credibility Access Card with the appropriate Essential Companion symbol
  • Other documents specifically accepted by the resort's current published list

Bring the relevant original or acceptable award evidence and photo identification for the named recipient. The published policy says letters from a care home or a generic care-home identity card are not themselves accepted as proof. If your documentation is unusual, confirm with Guest Services before travelling.

How do you claim the free companion admission?

  1. Purchase the disabled visitor's ticket for the chosen date or check their valid pass entitlement.
  2. Read the current companion documentation list before travel and have the required evidence ready.
  3. Arrive at the main entrance. The resort directs guests to Ticket Sales & Collections on the entrance plaza for document checks and ticket issue, with the entrance team able to direct arrivals appropriately.
  4. Keep the group together for any entry checks and follow the admission team's instructions.

The resort's support guidance says there is a reserved allocation for qualifying companion tickets, so do not assume a standard paid companion admission must always be bought online first. However, booking arrangements and specific offer exclusions can change; confirm the process linked below.

Is an Essential Companion ticket the same as a Ride Access Pass?

No. They solve different problems. Essential Companion admission relates to who accompanies a qualifying visitor into the park. The Ride Access Pass (RAP) is a separate queuing adjustment for people who meet Merlin's assessment of barriers to using standard queues. It requires its own application through the current Nimbus and Merlin process and use of the resort's virtual queuing system. A free companion ticket does not automatically provide a RAP, and having a RAP does not in itself confirm free companion admission.

Safety, height and evacuation requirements still apply at individual rides. Red or yellow RAP requirements determine support on attractions and should be checked separately from the ticketing arrangement. Read the official Ride Access Pass guide before planning the day.

Can two companions get in free?

Only a qualifying guest with a documented need for an additional helper can request a second Essential Companion ticket. The resort specifies extra evidence showing the requirement for 2:1 support, with recent documentation requirements for that additional companion. Do not assume that two friends or family members qualify simply because both regularly help the visitor.

What about Waterpark visits and short breaks?

Alton Towers Waterpark has its own Essential Companion arrangements and requires accepted evidence at Waterpark reception. For hotel short-break packages, the resort says qualifying Essential Companions can receive free theme park or Waterpark entry, but the accommodation and optional extras are not discounted automatically. Refund or booking adjustments may need to be arranged with the resort's Guest Experience team; check the exact booking conditions before purchasing.

A practical accessibility checklist

  • Check the disabled visitor's admission and any date-specific booking requirements
  • Keep required companion evidence and ID easy to access
  • Look at parking, step-free routes and toilets before leaving home
  • If required, apply separately for a RAP well ahead of your visit
  • Check attraction restrictions and request individual assistance rather than assuming universal access

Frequently asked questions

Is the carer ticket completely free at Alton Towers?

For an eligible Essential Companion, standard theme park admission is complimentary when the required evidence is provided. The disabled visitor and other guests still need their own eligible paid or pass-based admission.

Can a parent be an Essential Companion for a disabled child?

An adult parent can potentially act as the companion when the child's eligibility and evidence requirements are met. The adult must be capable of providing the necessary support.

Does a Blue Badge guarantee Ride Access Pass eligibility?

No. The companion admission and ride queuing adjustment have separate rules, and the RAP uses an assessment of the guest's barriers to queuing.

Can the companion go on rides alone?

A companion's role is to assist the qualifying guest. Ride access and participation depend on the individual pass and attraction rules, not a right to use special queues independently.

How old does an Essential Companion need to be?

At least 14 years old, according to the resort's published guidance.
