Final Exhibit: The Story Behind Alton Towers' Newest Scare Maze

For the first time in years, Scarefest returns to the Towers ruins.

Final Exhibit is the headline new maze for Scarefest 2026, and its location alone makes it significant. The ruins hosted Terror of the Towers for sixteen seasons before its retirement, and nothing since has quite replaced the atmosphere of a genuine derelict gothic mansion.

The Premise

You arrive at an exhibition of newly uncovered Alton Towers artefacts — objects recovered from the estate, presented for public viewing.

It doesn't stay that way.

Visitors are drawn beyond the exhibition into The Curator's hidden archive, a private collection that was never meant to be seen. And the archive has a rule: those who fail to escape become exhibits themselves.

It's a neat piece of construction, because it gives the maze a genuine threat without relying on a monster. The danger isn't being killed. It's being catalogued.

The Curator

The Curator presides over the archive and its contents — a collector rather than a killer, which places him in a different tradition to most Scarefest antagonists.

Where the Governess is driven by grief and the Skin Snatchers by desperation, the Curator is driven by completion. He wants the collection finished. You're simply a gap on a shelf.

The Archivists

The most interesting creative choice in the maze.

The Archivists are the Curator's silent, hypnotised servants — figures who almost certainly arrived as visitors and never left. They don't speak. No dialogue, no taunting, no warnings.

That silence does real work. Most scare actors telegraph intent through what they say; the Archivists strip that away entirely, leaving you unable to read what's coming. It also suits the setting — an archive is a place of enforced quiet, and staff who've been absorbed into the collection have no reason to speak.

Expect a slower, more deliberate performance style than the frenetic energy of mazes like The Attic.

Practical Details

| | | |---|---| | Location | Towers ruins | | Dates | 26 September – 1 November 2026 | | Closing time | 9pm | | VIP tour | Approx 60 minutes, ages 12+ |

The Archives Unlocked VIP tour runs alongside it — a lights-on walkthrough with a member of the team explaining the design and story, including a solo maze ticket and a pin badge. Worth considering if you want to understand the build rather than simply be frightened by it.

Why It Matters

Scarefest has spent recent years building mazes in temporary structures, purpose-built units, and repurposed ride buildings. They've produced some genuinely strong attractions — but none of them can borrow atmosphere from a real ruined mansion the way the Towers can.

Final Exhibit puts Scarefest back where it started. Given persistent speculation about whether the listed building can continue hosting mazes at all, it may also be a reassuring sign that the ruins aren't finished as a Scarefest venue.

Either way: this is the one to book first.
