Is Alton Towers Open All Year? What Stays Open in Winter

Quick answer: No—the main Alton Towers theme park does not run its full rollercoaster season all year. Its usual main season runs from spring into early November. However, Alton Towers Resort does not simply shut down completely: selected Christmas family activities, themed accommodation, the Waterpark and Extraordinary Golf may operate on published winter dates. Each experience has its own calendar, ticket rules and availability.

That distinction matters when booking. A resort hotel showing available rooms does not mean Nemesis Reborn, Wicker Man, The Smiler or every other major ride will be open the following morning.

Does the whole of Alton Towers close in winter?

Not in the same way. The main theme park runs a seasonal operation. Alton Towers’ official opening-times guidance says its full season is generally March to November and that the major rides go into winter hibernation. The resort separately promotes selected Christmas dates and short breaks, and says its Waterpark is available almost all year round.

Part of Alton Towers Resort What to expect outside the main season
Main thrill-ride theme park Full regular operation pauses for winter; do not book assuming all coasters run
CBeebies Land and family attractions A selected offering may operate on advertised festive days or short breaks; exact ride list varies
Alton Towers Waterpark Separate sessions may be available through much of winter; verify the session calendar
Hotels and themed accommodation Selected accommodation products and festive packages may be bookable; availability depends on date
Extraordinary Golf May be included with some packages or available separately; check your booking inclusions
Christmas experiences Special seasonal dates and attraction selections, not a standard full theme-park day

When does Alton Towers reopen after winter?

Alton Towers describes spring as its regular reopening period, typically in March. Do not assume last year’s opening Saturday is next year’s opening Saturday. The confirmed date, advertised ride availability and individual opening hours belong on the official operating calendar. For the exact end of the current main season, see our separate guide to winter closing dates.

Can you visit Alton Towers at Christmas?

Yes, but a Christmas Day Out is not the same ticket or attraction lineup as a normal summer visit. The resort advertises selected seasonal dates, festive entertainment and family attractions. Its official events calendar lists Christmas experiences separately from standard opening. That makes a winter visit attractive for families who prioritise festive entertainment over major thrill coasters. If you specifically want Nemesis Reborn or The Smiler, plan for the main season instead.

It is important to read the actual package rather than a general resort advert. Some Christmas products are day visits; others combine accommodation, family attractions, Waterpark time and entertainment. See our guide to Christmas attractions for the distinction.

Is Alton Towers Waterpark open when the rollercoasters are closed?

Often, yes. The indoor tropical Waterpark runs to its own calendar and can be an alternative during colder months. It is not automatically included in a standard theme-park ticket. Check session availability, any outdoor-area restrictions, supervision policies, height rules and what the specific hotel package includes before purchasing. A Waterpark session cannot be treated as admission to the main thrill-ride park.

Are the Alton Towers hotels open through winter?

Selected hotel dates and festive short-break products are available outside the main theme-park season. For example, the resort promotes family festive packages with hotel accommodation, breakfast, entertainment and selected activities. The list of inclusions is package-specific: a booked hotel night is not proof that the full park is running. The right comparison is the total price for the activities you can actually use, not only the headline room rate.

Compare available rooms at the Alton Towers Hotel, Splash Landings and CBeebies Land Hotel with your group’s needs. Some short-break products include admission to selected family attractions or a Waterpark session; others may differ. Our short-break planning guide explains the wider decisions.

Can you still ride rollercoasters at Alton Towers in December?

Do not book on that assumption. The standard major-coaster lineup is not operating as on a regular summer park day. Certain festive packages may include selected family rides, but the resort directs guests to the ride-availability terms for the specific event or short break. If you are choosing a trip primarily for the headline thrill rides, book a regular-season date with a suitable operating calendar.

How to book a winter trip without buying the wrong product

  1. Choose the objective. Is the trip for big rollercoasters, a festive family experience, swimming, or a hotel break?
  2. Check the exact calendar. Match theme park, Waterpark and hotel opening dates separately.
  3. Inspect what is included. Do not assume a day pass, Christmas package and hotel booking provide the same activities.
  4. Check children’s needs. Review height restrictions, entertainment ages and Waterpark supervision.
  5. Confirm final pricing. Include parking, meals and separately ticketed activities where applicable.

Frequently asked questions

Is Alton Towers open 365 days a year?

No. The full theme park has a seasonal main operating period. Selected resort facilities and special events operate beyond it.

Does CBeebies Land open in winter?

Selected family attractions may be available during advertised festive experiences. Not every CBeebies Land ride operates daily all winter; confirm the attraction list for the exact date.

Can I stay at Alton Towers without entering the theme park?

Packages and accommodation arrangements vary. Check the terms of the specific product; a hotel stay and full theme park admission are different things.

When is the best time for the full rollercoaster experience?

Choose the regular theme-park season and check attraction availability before travel. Seasonal special events may alter hours and ride operations.
